One of these byoooties was taking shelter from the rain on the outside of our kitchen wall this afternoon. 

This is a "Wasp Beetle", a beetle that mimics (very successfully) a wasp. It's quite a large insect, about 15mm long, found mainly in England - scarce in Wales and Scotland, and feeds on nectar and polen as an adult (wood as a larva).
This Wasp Beetle decided to take a stroll under the kitchen window sill, whereby a small spider dropped on it, and trussed it up like a right goodun!
