COMMON DAMSELFLY

Upon returning from the Farmers Market yesterday, (as in the changed time and date of this post), Anna spotted one of these on the front wall of the house, soaking up the milky sunlight.
There are quite a few species of Damselfly in the UK, most can be distinguished from each other by the markings on their SECOND abdominal segment. I won't bore you with all the variety of patterns (until I find another species), but it's fair to say that not only is the Common Blue Damselfly the most abundant of our Damselfly species (as its name suggests), its second abdominal segment has a mark like a club. Other species' second abdominal segments markings look like a long-eared rabbit, or a ballet dancer - like I said I'll go into more detail should I find a different species somewhere.

Just in case you were't aware, Damselflies can be distinguished from Dragonflies by the way they hold their wings (along their body) at rest, rather than Dragonflies which have their wings held like a plane at rest.
