A quick photo with the camera-phone and a little research on the Spider Identification Link on "Blue-Grey", and I've positively identified it as an adult female "Bridge Spider". Look at the markings on its back - these seem to be quite variable, but highly distinctive.

These spiders form two species of many species of British "Orb-web" (weaving) spiders, (there being two species of Bridge Spiders in the UK). Both Bridge Spider species live near water and are mostly found these days on man-made, (often metal) structures, such as bridges, hence their name.
The spider I photographed on the intercom fits this bill perfectly - on a metal structure (the intercom) and less than 100 yards from the river Thames!
I'm learning a lot with this camera-phone!
