Or to you and me, a big hoverfly that looks like a bumblebee - which I also found in the garden this afternoon.
This hoverfly exists in two forms, the one that I managed (this time) to photograph - mimicking the Red-Tailed Bumblebee (see my much earlier post on that bee), and a form that mimics the White-Tailed Bumblebee.
They are common, even in gardens and their larvae live as scavengers in Wasps' nests.
NB. My (otherwise excellent) field-guide doesn't tell me why they mimic bees though?
I must try to find that out...
I mean, if I donned a pair of oversized 70's shades, and painted my arse orange, impersonating a Red-Tailed Bumblebee, it wouldn't do me any good would it?
