FEMALE GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER

Well, I went out nice and early to see if the Peregrine was still in town.

It wasn't, of course!

Had to make do with getting a pretty poor shot (again) of our visiting Great (NOT GreatER, as some peole insist on calling it) Spotted Woodpecker.

I'm determined to get a better shot of this beautiful bird - I'm getting there slowly....

What is the main difference between the male and female?? we have one visiting the garden, but I'm not sure whether it's a he or she... I don't think it's a bad shot. I'd be happy with it! At least you caught the moment... and that's what really counts.

The male has a red mark at the back of his crown (above his nape).
The female has a totally black crown.
The juveniles have a red top to their head.
Thats pretty well how I tell them apart...!

Well, actually the main difference is that the female (as pictured here) has the head at the bottom and the arse area at the top, while with the male it's the other way round. Simple really.
