A DAY OFF AT THEALE LAKES

A day off - before I go back to work tomorrow night for the graveyard shift.

Only with all this flooding around - it will be ANYTHING but quiet over the next 7 nights - I just hope it doesn't get as bad as July....

Annnyway.

Spent the day off sliding over the mud around the local lakes.

I had hoped to see some Roe Deer from the train on the way down there.

No such luck - their fields are all under water at present...

I did see lots of nice birds though, in glorious (almost spring -like sunshine).

Both Peregrines, some Egyptian Geese, one Goldeneye drake again (furiously diving unlike the Pochard and Tufted Drakes surrounding him), and lots of passerines.

The fat Robins were singing very well today.

It really did feel like spring!

Oh, and if you're wondering, the Peregrine in the photograph is the (smaller) Tiercel (male), and the little brown bird is a (female) Reed Bunting in winter plumage.

Great pictures (again....) great to see the peregrine, and really liked the picture of the robin and Reed Bunting. Thanks. Looks like you had a great day.

I'm glad you like the piccies Jane.
Strange you mentioned the Robin and Reed Bunting though, because in a weird way, I happen to think my photograph of the Typha (Bullrushes) is one of the best, or at least "cleanest" shots I've ever taken with my new (2nd hand!) toy.
I might have cut off the bottom of the stalks a bit higher, but there's something about it that I can't put my finger on, that I really like...
Each to their own I guess!

It was VERY nice to see my Peregrines again.
I'm still hoping to get a shot of the one or two that occasionally roost in the town centre...!

I know what you mean. The bullrushes are very sculptural, but I guess when I'm commenting on other wildlife sites I tend to go into "wildlife" mode as far as the pictures are concerned... and sometimes forget the scenic ones... Did you make a decision on a camcorder?

Re the camcorder - not yet!
Though the HC127 (or whatever its called) is top of the pile at the moment...!

I'll be in contact soon enough Jane, for some more advice!

I subliminally inserted a space in the middle of the word "THEALE" in my initial reading of the title of this post.

Imagine "A DAY OFF AT THE ALE LAKES". That would be the best day off ever.

Ha...ha... you've turned into a halibut again! Yes "the ale lakes" would be great. Wonder what birds you'd get there? maybe swallows...
