Sloes (Slaes in Scots) are the fruiting bodies (in this case DRUPES again) of the Blackthorn, and look like tiny plums with a grey sheen to them.
Too astringent for eating (unless deep frozen as is the way in eastern Europe), they can though be used for the production of Sloe Gin, a favourite of a good pal of mine.
The old term "Sloe-eyed" meaning dark-eyed comes from these fruiting bodies.
