Superficially similar to the Dogwood (below), the Common Buckthorn's drupes are "mildly poisonous" also.
The name derives from the fact that on some species there is a sharp spine at the end of each branch.
The drupes were used as a purgative, but due to the dangerous side effects, that does not happen any more.
