MALE GREAT SPOTTED WOODPECKER ON LIME TREE

You'll just have to take my word for it that this was a male, and had a red band on the rear of its crown...

NB. And a couple of days later, here is the female (take my word for it, this bird had NO red flash on the back of her crown - meaning a hen bird).
